Jessica and Fadi E-Session

I have the honor and pleasure of shooting Jessica and Fadi’s wedding next April (2010). I’m looking forward to it and hope to be a part of making their day special. This past April we did and engagement session at Creekside Park in The Woodlands, Texas. Jessica and Fadi really wanted to have their pictures done during Texas bluebonnet season. Usually April is a good month. However, the bluebonnets were a little sparse by the time we made it to the park. Still, we had a great time and I really enjoyed working with Jessica and Fadi. They were up for any suggestions I had. You could tell they love each other and that their wedding will be a special and fun time.
Here are a few of my favorites from the session.
See more from the session at my flickr stream.

Last month I was able to shoot the wedding between my niece Heather and her now husband Jeff Klusek. The wedding took place in Brockport, New York. It was a great wedding and lots of fun. I’ll blog some of my favorite shots soon. In the mean time take a look at the album I designed for them. I decided to design it with a consistent look between most of the pages. Consistent border colors, background and embellishments. For a 15 page preview click on the announcement below:
I also got to witness my parents Phyllis and Jim Rector celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. That is quite a milestone. They renewed their vows at their Church on Sunday, June 7 and the family and friends had a great dinner at Glen Iris Inn in Letchworth State Park. I’ve also created an album for their special day. On this one I used the book vendors design software. I like how it turned out. For a preview click on the announcement below:

I had the opportunity to “second shoot” the wedding of Jennifer and Justin for Janet of Rainy Day Photos on March 7, 2009. The Venue for the 5pm wedding was Ashelynn Manor in Magnolia. It was a great venue with beautiful buildings and great people. I highly recommend them if you’re looking for a wedding location. All weddings I’ve been involved in are special and unique and this one was also. The Brides mother passed away the previous year but her spirit was very much alive and part of the ceremony – from a special prayer to a dove release.
I always like to start off with one of my favorite images from the day. I knew as soon as I took it that this one would fit the bill for this wedding. Taken with flash off-camera right using wireless flash triggers.
The Chapel, though not used for this wedding was great. This shot of the steeple was taken through some lattice.
Here’s the main house. The Bride and her attendants used it to get ready.
Father and Daughter right before walking down the isle. Always a special moment.
The flower girl was quite cute and made for many great photos during the evening. Here she is with a good show of the surrounding venue.
No doubt that Jennifer and Justin are in love. You can see it in their eyes.
As I said earlier, the dove release was pretty cool. Here’s the one I captured. Janet’s shot is much better. Be sure to go to her site and check it out.
Cake!
One of my signature silhouette shots. I try to get one of these at every wedding.
The first dance.
I’ll end with the happy couple in a sea of bubbles. Bubbles always make for some interesting shots.
I had a great time being Janet’s second shooter and hope to get the chance again sometime.

Bluebonnet “Trash the Dress” workshop
April 25, 2009 | Category: Artistic, Bridal, Everyday, Nature, Portrait, Wedding | 1 Comment
I had the pleasure of attending the Bluebonnet Trash the Dress (BTTD2) workshop on 04/05. The event was put together by the folks at The Photo Binder Studio and took place in Brenham, Texas. Basically what happened was there were about 30 models and about the same number of photographers. Different stations were set up with props and the models and photographers rotated around. If you were a photographer and you didn’t have someone to shoot it was your fault because there were plenty of locations and models to go around. I personally had a great time and met some great models and photographers.
The day started off cool and sunny, then turned windy, cloudy, and cold. At the end it was sunny and windy and didn’t warm up too much. So we had many different lighting and wind challenges. You can see my complete portfolio from the day here on my client site. But below are a few of my favorite shots from the day.
First up is Rainey. She was fun to work with and very professional. I hope to get the opportunity to work with her again soon.
Last one of Rainey with a little extra processing:
Danielle was also a great model to work with. Wish I had spent a little more time with her but still got some grea shots. The first has a little extra processing on it. Just experimenting.
Next up is Jacquelyn (Jackie). Also very professional and gracious.
Natalie added some more fun to the day. Some unique poses and good variety to the day.
Although there are many more that I’d like to add, I’ll close with Jessica.
Please visit the gallery to see more. There are many more that you won’t want to miss.

Lyra Faye – April 6, 2009
April 13, 2009 | Category: Announcements, Family | Comments Off
I’d like to introduce my new grand daughter Lyra Faye born on April 6, 2009. After a long night of labor my daughter Dawn gave birth to Lyra shortly after 6:00 am on Monday morning. Mother, Baby, an Papa are doing great. I know it’s been a week and this is old news for most of you but I just thought I’d share here to my photography friends.
Here’s a shot of Lyra about 2 hours old fresh after her first bath.
Comments Off | PermalinkEarlier I posted a video of some of Lauren’s senior shots. I think when I first met Lauren she was about 8 or 9 years old. Just a youngster. Well, It’s been a priviledge watching her grow up and mature into a fine Christian young lady.
It was a fun session. Since I relocated to the Houston area last week and Lauren lives in the Austin area I had to get over there or she had to come to Houston. We decided on the latter. Her and her mother came over on the Monday after the spring time change so we had some extra daylight. It was a beautiful day but just a little windy.
Here’s one of my favorites. Definitley not 9 years old.
As the light was fading we tried a little “dramatic” lighting. I always like to try this. Some like the effect, some don’t. I know that I do and Lauren thought it was cool.
Lauren looking comptemplative.
Another of my favorites.
Lauren is a harp player and we wanted to get that part of her life into some of her senior pictures.
Overall we had a great time with the shoot. If you want to see more or want to order some prints be sure to visit my commerce site and her gallery by clicking here.

Senior – Lauren 2009
March 16, 2009 | Category: Artistic, Portrait, Seniors | Comments Off
I had the pleasure of photographing Lauren last week. Lauren and her mom came form Elgin, TX to the Houston area for an evening photo shoot. It worked out great because the time had just changed to daylight savings time. I love it when photo subjects bring props and Lauren didn’t disappoint. She bought her harp. We were able to do some shots with the harp near a pond in our subdivision and then move to other areas for some shots after a quick change of clothes.
It was a great time and Lauren was a great subject. Here’s a quick video of some of the shots. Enjoy.
Comments Off | PermalinkEngagement Sessions – What to wear
March 12, 2009 | Category: Engagement, Family, Portrait, Wedding | Comments Off
Since I have some engagement sessions coming up I thought I’d offer some hints and suggestions on what to wear and how to prepare for your session. And, since I don’t want to reinvent the wheel I’m quoting a post by Mark Lydell of Lydell Photographic Art from his blog. Mark, thanks for letting me repost!
Remember that your images are designed to showcase YOU. Very simple garments and accessories always photograph best. You can be as casual or as formal as you want – most couples like to have great casual shots, but think about starting a little more dressed up, and then change into more casual clothes to finish the shoot. It really adds to the variety in the shots.
Hints:
- Wear what you usually wear – this is not the time to try out a new style which could make you feel uncomfortable. Your clothing should be comfortable and reflect your personality. Being comfortable is the most important thing, because if you feel self-conscious about what you are wearing it will show in your pictures.
- Avoid logos, numbers, lettering and words on your clothing unless it’s part of a theme for the session. Large logos draw attention away from you and onto your clothing, and will probably clash with the background.
- Select colors that go well together. You don’t have to “match” – It is flattering for couples to wear colors that compliment what the other is wearing. Many times solid earth colors are best.
- Bring some mints if you wish – but no gum!
- To avoid unsightly bulges and creases, don’t put too much stuff in your pockets.
- Feel free to bring some small props that reflect you and your personality. Do you have a favorite hat, sunglasses, etc.? Bring them!
- Think about a theme – what do you enjoy doing together? We’ve had couples who like to cook, so we start out with them cooking in the kitchen! Or couples who like to ride bikes! Whatever your passion is as a couple, let your photographer know ahead of time to plan for those moments.
- Pets!! If you have a dog or cat, get them into some shots as well! (I’m not discriminating against other pets…Iguana? Ferret? Parrot? Goldfish? Bring it on!)
BOTTOM LINE: Your engagement session is the perfect opportunity to get pictures that really show who you are as a couple. Don’t settle for just some posed head shots!
Hair and Make-up Tips:
- Have your hair and make-up done before you arrive for your session begins.
- Now is not the time to try something completely different! Stick with comfortable hair and make-up styles.
- Avoid wearing makeup heavier than usual. (unless your photographer let’s you know that your particular setting requires different makeup)
- Bring a small touch-up kit: hair spray, gel, lipstick/gloss, mirror, etc. (It should be in something easy to carry, and set down during the day)
- Use lotion on your hands; make sure your hands and nails are well manicured.
I’ll add some other comments. Have fun! You are in love, that’s why you’re getting married. As your photographer I want you to relax and enjoy yourself and one another. Some of the best engagment shots are those that are caught between “the posing” and make fantastic intimate portraits.

New tool and example
January 26, 2009 | Category: Artistic, Processing, Technology | Comments Off
Here’s a shot that I took this weekend of my grandson Ethan. He’s always up for a picture although sometimes he “over smiles.” Even though I think it’s a great shot my main reason for posting is to showoff a new Photoshop tool that I got from OnOne Software called PhotoFrame. I’m just learning the tool and the things I can do with it. Please comment if you like the effect or even if you don’t like the effect. But be sure to tell me why. If you’re a photographer and use the tool feel free to comment with links pointing to your use of PhotoFrame. I’m always open to ideas.
